Today, November 17, is National Baklava Day! We here at Grecian Delight are thrilled about celebrating this holiday! In honor of this day, we want to give you a little lesson on what Baklava is and some fun facts about it!
Baklava is a popular, rich and sweet pastry that is found in many cuisines of the Middle East and much of central and southwest Asia. It is made of layers of phyllo pastry dough with chopped nuts, usually sweetened with syrup or honey. It is found in most, if not all, Greek restaurants, and we are very proud to say that we have created
delicious Baklava here at
Grecian Delight .
A few fun facts about Baklava:
- Oldest Baklava recipe was found in a Chinese cook book written in 1330
- In 2008, the Turkish patent office registered a geographical indication certificate for Baklava for the city Gaziantep, the city that is known for its delicious Baklava
- In Afghanistan, Baklava is prepared into triangle shaped pieces and covered in pistachio nuts
- In Armenia, Baklava is made with cinnamon and cloves
Grecian Delight offers a delicious version of Baklava for order. However, if you want to attempt to make this on your own tonight to celebrate the holiday, here is an easy recipe for you to try:
Ingredients:
- 1 (16oz) package phyllo dough
- 1 pound walnuts
- 1 cup butter
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup honey
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and butter a 9x13 pan. Chop nuts and toss with a cinnamon and set aside. Place 8 sheets of phyllo dough in pan & butter each thoroughly. Sprinkle 2-3 tbsp of nut mixture on top. Top with 2 sheets of dough, butter, nuts, layering as you go. The top layer should be about 6-8 sheets deep. Cut square shapes & bake for 50 min. until gold and crisp. To make the sauce: boil sugar & water until sugar is melted, add vanilla & honey, simmer for 20 min.
